The Today Show featured a segment on food storage containers - presented by Woman's Day Magazine. They spotlighted the top storage container types we should have in our kitchens - from plastic and pyrex to stainless steel. Tips on how to store for easy access; the most efficient sizes. ready_to_roast_108Dinner made easy! Empire Kosher Poultry Ready to Roast Chicken Garlic & Herbed Seasoned.  A welcome option for those days when you are short on time but want to eat healthfully. The pre–seasoned whole chicken comes in a cook–in bag that can be roasted in the oven (for one hour) or microwaved (20 minutes).  We tried it using both cooking methods and liked it –convenient, tasty, and best of all – featherless.  All uncooked chickens should look this good!

The Cake Mix Doctor’s Cake Mixes  cakedoctorsmix

Anne Byrn followed a cake dream to create a yellow cake mix that gets its color from butter and eggs, not artificial colors, and its scent from real Madagascar vanilla. Her cake dream is now a reality, a Kof–K dairy kosher certified reality.

In addition to the yellow cake mix, Anne’s second creation is a chocolate mix with a deep chocolate fudgy flavor. Her chocolate mission was to develop a cake mix that resulted in a cake that tasted as good as her mom’s, but that didn’t require an afternoon to assemble.

There are only 5 (yellow cake) or 6 (chocolate cake) ingredients in each cake mix, period! No additives, preservatives or trans fats.

The cake mixes – which are available in both old fashioned yellow and deep dark chocolate are simple to make, and oh so good, especially when slathered with frosting…Chocolate Buttercream or Vanilla Buttercream.

New Zealand Shechita Donation Campaign

Our KosherEye Friend, Norman Kabak, Wellington, New Zealand, is asking us to share the following information on how we, in the U.S., can help in the fight to stop the ban on shechita (ritual slaughter) in New Zealand. Norman is a member of the Fundraising Committee, New Zealand Shechita Donation Campaign, and is reaching out to all of us.

Please read this very important plea, share it with your family and friends, and if you can, please help in this important matter – it effects all of us.

New Zealand Shechita Donation Campaign

The fight to stop the ban on shechita!

Yes, we have won a partial victory, now help us win the entire fight. Please give a thought to the Jewish community in New Zealand.

In 1933, Nazi Germany banned Kosher slaughter under the pretext of animal welfare. Now, 77 years later, the same argument was presented by the Minister of Agriculture to justify his decision, making New Zealand the only country in the world to behave in the same way as Nazi Germany.

This decision went against the advice of officials who recommended that shechita be exempted from the animal welfare regulations, as are home killing and hunting. The minister explicitly recognized the effect of his decision on the Jewish community in New Zealand, effectively concluding that there aren't enough of us to be important!.

The Jewish community of New Zealand has filed suit against this regulation in the New Zealand High Court. A partial victory has been achieved because the High Court has signed a provision allowing kosher slaughter of poultry, only. Therefore the fight continues.

There are only about 2,000 Jewish households in New Zealand.  Each family belonging to a congregation has been asked to contribute $150 to help cover the cost of the attorney's fees. This is a very sizable sum for many of these households and will not nearly go far enough toward covering the real costs of the case. We ask those who care to fight this indecent ban, to assist us by contributing the cost of one family dinner in a kosher restaurant.

This will not nearly go far enough, and we ask those who care to fight this indecent ban, to assist us by contributing the cost of one family dinner in a kosher restaurant, or whatever you feel you are able to.

This is your fight too!!!!

Eventually, this will become your fight as well if this trend is permitted to continue. Please assist us by helping to defray our legal costs. It would be a Kiddush HaShem!

Arrangements have been made to make a tax deductible contribution in the United States, to assist in paying the legal costs for our case in the High Court regarding the ban on shechita.

Please have all your friends, relatives and acquaintances who wish to make payment in U.S. dollars to send checks, made payable to:

Rabbi's Discretionary Fund-Lincoln Square Synagogue,
Subject line: New Zealand

and mail it to:

Lincoln Square Synagogue
200 Amsterdam Avenue
New York, NY 10023

Credit card contributions can be made via the following link, but are not tax deductible outside of New Zealand, and there will be a small charge levied by the processing company in addition to your donation.

The New Zealand Shechita Donation Campaign can be accessed here: http://bit.ly/9KvtEF

By clicking on the above link, people can make a secure credit card payment.

Please, can we ask that you circulate the link to relatives, friends and colleagues far and wide and ask them to help with a donation to assist with our legal fees.

The Buzz from Kosherfest

At first taste – We present some of our favorites:

Matzel Toff – A triple combo of toffee-chocolate matzah. Our favorite was dark chocolate with sea salt. We agree with Martha Stewart’s choice! And yes, it will be kosher for Passover.

Shiloh sauces – Béarnaise, Harissa and more; attractive bottles, terrific flavors. KosherEye foodie friend Ronnie Fein suggests this one as well.

kfimanipretzelsImani Chocolatiers – Parve chocolate and sprinkle dipped pretzels. So crunchy, so chocolatey and so beautiful!

Kind Fruit and Nut Bars – All natural, gluten and wheat free. New flavors – Apple Cinnamon & Pecan, Peanut Butter & Strawberry, Dark Chocolate Cherry Cashew.

Beit Yitzhak – 100% natural fruit spreads and jams from Israel.

Lily Bloom’s Kitchen – Decadent gourmet chocolate macaroons.

Strub's Banderilla Skewers – Skewers of sour gherkin, green olive, pearl onion, pepper slice. We pick this pickled paradise on a skewer.

kfgusespicklesGus’ pickles – A New York classic!

Schmerling –  Rich deep dark chocolate with hazelnuts- irresistible! Parve! Passover!

The Kosher Cook – Challah dough cover. We can’t wait to try this item!

We Toast Five New Spirits:
Bravo Sol Sangria and Pompillo Mojito, both pre-mixed ready to drink in a box.

Heering – New Heering Coffee liqueur and classic Heering Cherry liqueur; kosher.

Glenmorangie – Single malt scotch whiskey – recently kosher certified.

Moses Vodka – From Finland; gorgeous bottle, ultra premium vodka, kosher and kosher for Passover. Made from sugarcane.

And more… Belgian Crepes, artisan breads, flavored sausages, Asian specialties, frozen ready to eat meals, pastries, ice cream, Greek yogurt, organic juices… We will be reviewing, featuring and sampling additional Kosherfest products in the coming weeks. We just couldn’t taste it all!

kfcompetition“Here Comes The Judge”…
How delighted we were to be invited to judge the Kosherfest 3rd Annual Chefs Culinary Competition. This year the competition was for Best Cold Appetizer. On the panel with us, (KosherEye co-founders Roberta Scher and Lois Held), were Dr. Ted Merwin, Dickinson College professor and Jewish food expert, and Gil Marks, James Beard award winning author, who just introduced his newest publication The Encyclopedia of Jewish Food.

Participating chefs…
Chef Salim Fysal of Dashkin Glatt Kosher Indian Bistro, Chef Albert Bijou of Heaven’s Kitchen Corporation, Chef Avram Wiseman of The Center for Kosher Culinary Arts, Chef Chef Pini Ben-Ari of U-Café

kfjudgesAnd the winner is…
Chef Avram Wiseman, who presented a filet of locally caught Long Island striped bass rubbed with a tandori spice mix, grilled and placed over a lentil salad. The fish was topped with a spicy pineapple salsa and plated with a tarragon vinaigrette dressed micro green salad. Sounds delicious? It was!
